Helpful Information for You to Know

  • The fitting of a weighted breast prosthesis, also referred to as a breast form, is not only for aesthetic appearances. It is also a therapeutic measure that replaces the weight of a lost breast. When you are fitted with a breast prosthesis that matches in size and shape to the existing breast, the weight equilibrium of the body is kept in balance, reducing chronic lower back pain, shoulder discomfort, and/or other disorders.
  • It is extremely important to be fitted by a trained, certified professional. At Advanced, you can expect an emphasis on personal, confidential service in a private environment that is designed to put you at ease. Through a fitter's expertise you will enhance your comfort, appearance, and self image.
  • It is usually 4-6 weeks after surgery before you will be ready for your fitting. As soon as the swelling and tenderness have gone, the doctor will write a prescription. You can then schedule an appointment to be fitted for bras and a breast form.
  • Breast forms come in many different sizes, shapes and weights. Advanced mastectomy fitters are trained to measure and select a proper prosthesis for each individual woman.
  • Breast prosthesis and surgical or mastectomy bras are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance companies. Advanced insurance department will obtain any needed documentation, including physician's prescription, and insurance approvals. In general, a fitting should be checked at least once per year, or when breast size change occurs due to weight loss or gain.
